... so each car has same torque at wheels near redline. also assumes same drag. 1/4 miles are mostly all about max hp/wt.
Bottom line is as long as the max hp-to-weight ratio is the same, and 1/4 mile shifts are around the hp peak, the low rev turbo diesel will have simlar times as the high rev rx8.
this is why a simple equation with only max hp and weight inputs can closely predict 1/4 mile performance.
as you know, one advantage of of an engine with high low end torque, like old saabs, is very strong acceleration possible w/o down shifts. Go wot in a 9000 aero in 5th at 65 mph, and similar hp rx8 would have to downshift 2 gears or more to match it.
