It is nice to find another who is interested in making the original carburetor work! Although I too was strictly warned against it, I am currently running the original 1bbl FoMoCo on my 71. I rebuilt it myself using a combination of manuals. Although I learned quite a bit from Jack Ashcraft and his manuals, I also highly recommend consulting the SAAB V4 service manual! If you can find your carburetor's original aluminum ID tag, it will be of much benefit as settings differ and changes were made almost every year. They are prone to leaking if the joining surfaces are not perfectly flat, however that can easily be cured by applying the gasket with a trace amount of Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket. I removed the positive vacuum supply (pvs) valve and the deceleration valve completely, and ran a vacuum advance line directly from the carb to the distributor advance, and plugged the retard/decel end.
A word of caution: (I am suprised Eric in Vermont didn't mention) There is a height clearance problem when installing the Weber 34ICH in a Sonett. This is typically circumvented with some hokey air clean set-ups, which I found unacceptable. With some spare parts and advise from Eric (Eric In Vermont) and some tinkering, I recently finished a set-up with a K&N air filter that meets clearance requirements AND looks sharp. It took some shopping, but I have an ajustable throttle linkage and perfectly fitting hoses for the pcv valve to valve cover and the breather hose from the K&N filter to the valve cover. It is ready to install (from the polished intake manifold to the chrome covered K&N), but as long as the FoMoCo keeps purring, it will probably remain in storage. I have been posting pictures of the Weber set-up on my Sonett III Project web page. If you care to take a peak, there is a link below.
