I got a much stronger signal level through the hardwired setup and much better frequency response. A noticeable difference.
I don't think it will cost you $300. If you can solder, try the mod shown at the link below yourself. I did this mod myself last weekend and I'm very pleased with the results. I used a Radio Shack shielded 1/8" audio cable (catalog no. 42-2492). Cut off the male end, soldered the cut end to the head unit as shown at the link, ran the cable behind and under the ACC, drilled out a hole in the blank button next to the passenger side seat-heat switch, and fit the female end of the cable in the hole to make a 1/8" jack in the center stack below the ACC. Very clean.
If you solder the cable in as shown at the link, route the cable through the little gap in the rear head unit chassis between the rear lower edge of the CD player sub-chassis and the rear upper edge of the tape deck sub-chassis. This will allow you to route the cable out the rear of the cage in which the head unit is mounted in the dash. Good luck!
