In my car, I prefer the FM converter to the cassette. The quality was probably close, but the clicking sound from the cassette drove me nuts.
The Monster adapter has worked well for me - but the caveat is that I live in the country where there is not an issue with real radio stations taking over. When we came back from NJ through NYC and southern CT, the converter was worthless because there were so many radio stations all over the dial. Then again, it was easy to find whatever genre of music we wanted....
When I get bold, or find someone I really trust, I'll go the hard wire route, but in the meantime, I'm sticking with what I have. This also plugs into the bottom of my iPod so it charges at the same time - and I get all the volume I need from the regular controls.
