I have the Griffin SmartDeck cassette adapter for my iPod. The sound quality is excellent to my ears. (Remember to turn off the Dolby noise reduction, or any cassette adapter will sound like crap.) It automatically adjusts the iPod's output level to optimize the signal strength.

The SmartDeck's unique advantage -- and weakness -- is that it can control the iPod, too. The unit senses the tape winding motor motion. If you fast-forward the tape, it tells the iPod to skip to the next song. Rewind goes back to the beginning of the song, or to the previous song. Turn off the tape deck or the car, and the iPod pauses. This means you can use your steering-wheel controls to change songs.

Unfortunately, the SmartDeck isn't fully compatible with the Pioneer head unit in my experience. In the colder months, if the tape deck is still cold, the SmartDeck will get very confused and order your iPod to do crazy things, and then the tape deck will report TAPE ERR 01. If you wait until the cabin is up to a comfortable temperature, it works fine. It works fine when it's nice out, too. If you're mainly looking for a unit to use on long trips, this limitation may not be a big problem.

There are two versions of SmartDeck -- the older version that works with iPods having the remote-control connector next to the headphone jack, and the newer version that works with any Dock-connector iPod (and thus with the Nano and 5G iPod). The Dock-connector version can't be used at the same time as a car charger, which is a bit of a design flaw.

If you want a place to store your iPod while you drive, I really like the Brodit mount from proclipusa.com. The clips are made in Sweden and come in two components. One is a universal mounting pad. For the 9-5, they have several that mount in different locations: On the center console, beneath the cupholder, in front of the drivers' right-side vent, on the left of the steering wheel. They're all designed to be easily removed. I have the under-the-cupholder mount, which clicks into place wedged in the gaps between the radio and fascia, and between the fascia and the padded edge of the dash. Then you add the holder component appropriate to your iPod model and needs. They have custom solutions for just about any model of car and portable device. It's a very slick system.
