Your example of the Honda/Acura with more horses out of less displacement is the crux of it. 140 ft/lbs won't move a 3,500lb car and how much "lag" would it take to get to the 5,000 plus rpm's to find that measly 140 ft/lbs? It takes 3.2 liters of Acura V6 and all the weight and complexity of it, to get as much torque as a 2.3 liter Saab LPT turbo, and that torque is still at 4,700 rpm! Wait around long enough to get into the powerband and the Acura is faster. Same with the 528 I took in trade, a real stone until 4,500 plus revs.
