I have a '99 Saab 9-5 (4 cylinder auto) bought new in Feb 1999. In my experience reliability and the ability of the dealer to fix the problems are not Saab's strong points. I have had a string of problems with numerous trips to the dealer. Not all are fixed at this writing. The car is out of warranty (64M) and to some extent I hold my breath every time I drive. I hope that you have better luck with yours than I have had with mine.
By the way I also live in the South but I haven't noticed Saab's saluting one another when they pass. They are unusual here; perhaps they are designed for the cold and snow and do not like our warm weather.
The car has some pluses such as ergonomics and great cruise control. It does however have alot of road noise.
By the way be very careful about the front fog lights. Look under your car and see how far they stick out and how easily they can break off.
In addition, like you I had Toyotas for years. If I had to do it all over again that is what I would have bought.
