9-5 vs. Passat 1.8T

I think both should only be had with the 5 speed; the autobox in a Linear or Passat 1.8T totally robs the engines of their grunt. BUT I think it's worse on the Passat. So if you're getting an autobox, the Passat is not the best choice if you value crisp acceleration.
On the other hand, my 2000 Passat 1.8T (now sold) had great accelleration with a 5 speed (and it was the earlier 150hp edition, not the current 170hp).
The seats in the Passat, if leather, are a bit hard and not as form-fitting in comparison to the Saab's. If you want leather seats, the Saab's are much better. If you don't want leather seats, the VW's are very nice, grippy and softer than comparable VW leather seats.
I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. I happen to like the 9-5 styling better than the current Passat (too chromey, the previous edition was much nicer).
The Jetta wagon is way too small, not a good value.
My analysis would be: 5 speed only; if auto, Saab is the better choice. After that, the Passat is a nice value for the money -- you'll probably pay about 3-4K less than the Saab, with incentives factored in. But the Saab is a nice, cozier car, while the VW has that famous hard German "charm".
