If you were to do a lease instead of a purchase, the numbers are more favorable for the 9-5 over the Passat wagon. Last year, we also looked at the VW Passat (new for '02) and the Volvo V70. The V70 at the time had few incentives, the base model is underpowered and did not have the free scheduled maintenance for 3yr/36k. The Passat was real nice and we seriously considered it, as it was more in our budget. But in the end, the SAAB won. We ended up getting a '01 9-5 LPT auto wagon with the Premium package and vented seats. The lease on our 9-5 was not much more than a loaded Passat GLXV6 model-and the SAAB was bigger, had more features and just more fun to drive.
I'd go for the 9-5! :-)
