"interior construction (not design or materials) is, IMO, superior"
So you think that the Passat has inferior design and materials (I concur), but that it is constructed better. What interior components on your 9-5 have failed?
I was looking for a wagon, so my choices were quite limited.
I originally considered a Passat or A4. The Passat is very nice for the money, but I found the handling unacceptable (not up to Linear), and the interior (especially the door panels) lacking.
However, my wife likes their looks, and I wouldn't dissuade her from getting one (I know better).
