Time will come when all cars will have an OnStar type system, mandated by the government, just like seatbelts and airbags. It makes too much sense. OnStar can save lives.
Keep in mind that I am not talking about the navigational or concierge services, but the airbag deployment notification. I was in a terrible accident in a Saab pre-OnStar, and am scared to think what could have happened if it didn't occur within view of so many people who called 911 immediately. Every second counts, and with OnStar contacting you the minute your airbags deploy they are saving precious time.
I truly think that in 5 or 10 years we will have a law which requires all new vehicles to have airbag deployment notification systems like OnStar. Obviously there are pricing issues that have to be dealt with, but I can't see why a basic safety package like airbag deployment notification should cost any more than $15-20 a year once companies like OnStar get their act together and form a truly cohesive system.
As is now, most of OnStar can be set aside in favor or faster solutions like GPS and 411.
