I remember that story as well. One problem with Onstar as implemented in SAAB (don't know if this also applies to other car makes as well, but let's assume that it holds true for others) is that there is no backup battery to provide power to Onstar to make that emergency call in the case of a car crash. For example-if you had a head on collision or a collision that would disable the battery, then Onstar can't make that emergency call because it's dead-no power.

It's like having a cellphone with a dead battery. Useless.

There are other problems with Onstar, but most who have used it know its pros and cons. It has been well doncumented on the various boards and I won't go into it here.

However, I do like the idea of Onstar and some of the features it provided during the year I had it, but not enough to justify renewing my subscription (which lapsed over the weekend) as the costs at the present time are too exhorbitant.

It's true that Onstar is a big money loser for GM, and time will tell whether it dies a miserable death. At the moment, I think not-as M-B, Audi, Acura and others have also signed on and offer this as a feature for their cars.
