If you don't want OnStar, you don't have to pay the monthly fee. Saab even gives you a free year!
Here's another thing Saab "forces" on us, which we have to continuously pay for to keep working:
- windshield wiper fluid - we have to pay for the nozzles and washer resevoir upfront even if we don't want it... the nerve of Saab!
The problem people have with the charge for OnStar, as do I, is that it is very expensive. I don't think people would dislike OnStar so much if a REASONABLE safety package was offered, like automatic airbag deployment notification (for ALL airbags) and stolen vehicle recovery for $15 or $20 a year. I agree that what they charge now is a bit pricey. But there is no denying the safety that OnStar adds. It's just an insurance policy that many people find too pricey to have.
OnStar is just another safety system, evolved. I agree 100% that it has some MAJOR, MAJOR flaws, but I think, as stated before, that in 5 to 10 years systems like OnStar (hopefully better systems) will be omnipresent in American vehicles.
Heck, Acura, Honda, Toyota and Lexus like OnStar... so I don't think GM has it all wrong on this one.
