DI Death

Hi,
With apologies to TxG (whose favorite subject is Mobil 1 and least
favorite subject is DI death), I will repost information which was
posted by someone who experienced DI death which left him stranded in
precarious circumstances. The thread was accidentally deleted during
upgrades to BB system.
He was stating that he had earlier experienced problems with electronic
throttle as well.
The best information we have thus far is that DI is being killed by
excess heat. Sometimes heat kills DI instantly, and sometimes DI is
cooked slowly and the symptoms of the cooking show up later.
One thing which helps prevent DI death is small spark plug gap (about
0.9mm is recommended). This is because plug gap determines maximum
voltage experienced by secondary coil. Until spark jumps the gap,
secondary coil + gap act as a simple circuit consisting of inductor and
capacitor. The greater the gap, the greater the capacitance of spark plug
gap. The higher voltages result in greater heat (wasted energy) which can
fry the semiconductors which form the capacitive discharge ignition system.
All evidence and logic points to the fact that small spark plug gap
does not completely eliminate DI death.
Instant death usually happens in hot summer months. DI death resulting
from slow cooking and resulting unreliability happens at any time of year.
thanks
Jae
