I've been there before, too. I was on vacation with my family to Hot Springs, AK in '97 when the DI on my '94 900SET was on its death throes on my trip there. Fortunately for me, I was about to get to my destination instead of being stranded in the middle of literally nowhere.

I was right about at 75k miles (SAAB had a 6yr/80k mi warranty on the engine/drivetrain components back then), but there was no dealer in the area-just a service point about 80 or so miles away. Had to be towed to Little Rock, where the service point (a tiny service garage), carried few new parts, much less new DIs. They pulled on off a new 900 convertible (as well as having to rebuild my near dead alternator) and sent me on my merry way.

I'm not sure where I stand on the DI issue. Other carmakers have adopted DI-are they too suffering from high failure rates, or is this a problem unique to SAAB? I don't know. My first DI in my SET lasted over 70k miles (which seems reasonable to me). My second DI in the SET has lasted 50k miles (before I preemptively replaced it, where it now resides in my trunk). Is this an aberration?

My '01 LPT wagon has 17k miles, so I can't comment on its DI other than it is working.

Sure I got ticked when my DI went out. But I got ticked when my clutch cable (a notorious failure in NG900s) went out, too-leaving me stranded in rush hour traffic.

Mechanical parts fail, and usually when you least expect it. They're not supposed to last forever, nor or they supposed to fail prematurely. Wherein lies the fault? I don't know the answer to that question. Does anyone?

I suppose a good lawyer could.... ;-)
