I think it's in the best interest of any owners concerned about this component's reliability to contact Saab USA and request return communication to address these concerns.
My DI failed, which prompted me to research the failure cause and also contact Saab USA. Saab USA replied that "Saab is an innovator, and with innovations there can be drawbacks". I also asked them to warrant my DI to 100k miles or send me a spare, neither of which they acted on.
My belief is that the design of the DI trades reliability for an enhanced combustion process. It employs a capacitive discharge system, which is typically used in racing engines for it's superior spark in high rpm and rich combustion mixtures (as in turbo charging). But this design is complex, with a 400V power supply, high voltage discharge capacitor, multiple SCRs (in some variant, such as triacs) and a combustion analyzer module. And IMO the big problem is in the environment where the DI lives, atop the engine in a non-ventilated area with no scarcity of high temps which can seriously shorten electronic component longevity.
Most owners who have not experienced a failure are critical of these types of posts, but as I like my Saabs and would like to own another in the future, I post because I believe that changing this design will result in good things for Saab and Saab owners, as opposed to having to tote a spare ignition system in the auto.
BTW, according to DR. Boost the new 9-3 employs a simpler inductive discharge direct ignition design, but still utilizes the spark plug to sense ionization and control combustion.
