ETA is great as noted by others; I will often estimate mileage distances before I leave, and am usually w/i 10-15 miles. Gives a good ballpark for time / miles left along the way, and is good for "older" kids, too.
The average estimates are fairly good once you've been on the road for a bit. If you have a long highway run, it will take 15-20 mins to avg, and if you have a long back road route, it will take the same to avg once you are off the highway, but it is fairly accurate. If your destination is close to a highway, you'll hardly notice more than a 5 minute swing.
My last trip to VT had many not so well marked turns and markers with no mileage or time estimates in the directions.
I noted the trip odo mileage at the turns on my written directions as I went up. On my return trip, I left the SID on the miles to go and knew when to start looking for these poorly marked turns to come up.
The SID wasn't exactly on, since I couldn't set it down to 1/10ths of a mile, but it did make it interesting and helpful (Especially when I knew I had to turn around on one miss!) And I know at least one of the others in my group missed a couple of turns, too, but had no warning of their oops.
(I had estimated distance on my departure so I was using the estimated time of arrival/distance to go, but otherwise you could just start the SID at zero as someone else mentioned, and then you would have the distances.)
On long trips that are repeated(to parents, etc), I've just made a note of the mileage. It was interesting to see much "known" distances changed when I switched to the snow tires w/o reprogramming the tire size w/tech2!
On daily use, I typically use the mpg and avg speed screens the most.
