Well I guess it depends whether you prefer sticks or autos. Like others here, I drive only sticks, but I can say I find the stick on my '01 fine, as good as any other I've used (no fancy cars, Passat, Corolla, Stanza, Bug, old Peugeot 3 on the tree). No complaints with the stick at all; you shift it, it shifts. I don't know about notchy or long throw, feels fine to me. Just had an '04 auto loaner, hated having auto, stepping on the gas and having a lag (even with Sport mode). I'm sure it's a good autobox, but I just don't like any auto.
But maybe I'm just stuck in the past - I liked the softer suspension on my '01 better than the stiffer '04. The '04 cornered better (though not much, still a bunch of body roll), but I go over alot of rough pavement and really like the compliant '01 ride.
