I have an '03 Aero with the manual. My other car is a '92 Saturn SC. The Saturn has the best stick shift I've ever driven, and this includes the Saab, 330i, a couple Civics, Corolla, G35, 240SX, an old Daytona turbo, and lots of trucks. It is light, smooth, just jumps from one gear to the next. The clutch is so nice and smooth, even after 184,000 miles.
The 9-5's isn't that good. The clutch action is nice, but the shifter is, as many have said before, a bit rubbery, long throws, and just doesn't have that snap into gear like some better ones do. That said, it's a hell of a lot better than the automatic! I drove a 5 speed auto Aero in Sweden last year, and had an '04 Arc auto as a loaner recently. I just don't like 'em. Even a good auto is disconcerting to someone who really likes to do it themselves.
