Torque sticks are a relatively new tool. They go between an air wrench and the lug nut and are supposed to limit to a specific amount the torque that can be applied by the wrench. Theoretically, with a torque stick, you can hold down the trigger on an air wrench all day long and only get the specified torque. Theoretically the same torque level is repeated on each lug nut that it is applied to. It is an attempt to idiot proof the lug nut installation process.
They are sold to garages in sets of various pre-set torque levelss along with a cross-reference listing different car makes and the correct stick to use with each car when tightening lug nuts. "I don't know what torque is, I just know to use the yellow stick on a Ford"
I ran into them everywhere I went this spring when trying to get my wheels swapped. "Do you use a torque wrench when tightening the nuts?" "We use torque sticks."
So, Ian is saying to avoid them. I'd like to hear some discussion about these by people in the know. Do they work? Is the amount of torque applied always the same from lug-nut to lug-nut? Is the cross reference listing accurate? Etc.
