Have you noticed that? "Given the driver knows how to drive an auto, I couldn't disagree more" ;) While an average slushbox driver would be rather bad in driving a stick, the opposite is also true. Everyone can put the pedal to the floor and think there's all to it, but driving an automatic takes a different approach and skill, everything feels differently. Granted, it gives you less freedom, but if you get to know your auto box better, you can also keep it in the gear you want and at the RPM you want. It's not ideal, but it can be done even on a conventional paddle-less transmission.
A manual transmission doesn't make you a safer driver. Your own passion for driving does. You can be very alert with an automatic and sloppy with a stick. Moreover, an auto actually has its own advantage in the safety department: it allows you to left foot brake, full time, improving your stopping time. This saved me more than once in the dance traffic of Toronto and Montreal.
To the original poster: don't listen to anyone. Just drive both and buy the one you feel more comfortable with.
