Yup. Test light ("timing light") will tell the tale...

Todd,
I asked for and got one of those neat "dial in the advance" timing lights with the inductive lead for my birthday this year (I know, a true car nut, I am...).
Mine was about $65 and came from Advance Auto Parts here in North Carolina. You don't have to spring for such an expensive timing light like those with the advance function (all that does is let you zero the timing light flashes to your base timing, then when you rev up engine, it lets you read directly what your amount of centrifugal/vacuum timing advance--or retard, on Turbos--is, without playing a subtraction game). If you don't want to check timing advance/retard amounts above idle speed (or 2000 rpm for some 8-valve base timing checks), then get a regular timing light for $30 to $40 (but get one with inductive lead). Here's why:
The inductive lead simplifies connecting the timing light. All you do is connect timing light's 12V+ lead to battery positive terminal, then the light's neg. lead to ground, and clamp inductive lead around #1 spark plug wire. That's it! Old timing lights (prior to the 1980s-90s, I guess) required the user to install a timing light adapter between spark plug's top end and the plug wire's boot. They were awkward to use.
Hope this helps!
