Doesn't your '91 have the Hall-effect sensor on the crankshaft pulley (like my '89)? If so, then a timing light won't tell you anything about the distributor position. You can tell, because if its on the crankshaft, then there will be NO electrical connections to the distributor body.
The spark timing is controlled by the crank sensor. When you loosen & rotate the distributor nothing changes, until you move it far enough that the rotor is not pointing close to a post on the cap. Then you get no spark, & the engine dies.
I believe you just line up marks on the distributor & head, its not really critical.
