Well, it was raining last night, so I just looked at the book - not at the actual car.
There's supposed to be a mark on the outside of the distributor base(?) towards the LH side of the car. It's supposed to line up with the split between the head & the valve cover. Clean it up, stand on the LH side & look past the thermostat housing... On our '89 the spring clips holding the distributor cap are roughly horizontal to the ground.
If its running well, this is probably a waste of time. Because if the spark were running off one side of the rotor, or missing altogether, your engine should run badly or not at all.
