You can check the timing with a timing light, just like normal by shining it on the flywheel marks. But, you don't twist the distributor to adjust it. You loosen the mounting screws for the crankshaft sensor & move the sensor a bit. The fun part is, you can't do that unless you first remove the crank pulley. Besides, there's not much motion for adjustment anyway, just some slack in the mounting holes. You might(?) also be able to loosen the screws on the pulley, which hold the steel aperture, & move that a bit. I'm not sure, because I haven't done that. I've checked my timing a few times (in 218k miles) & its NEVER moved.
Marks on the distributor? I'm not sure because I've never had to remove the distributor. I said that because I remembered the shop book saying something about marks. I'll have to look.
Why do you say your timing was off when they did your crank pulley? Did you check with a timing light at that time?
