I am real familiar with mechanical failure patterns of vehicles. There are just TOO many transmission failures to say it is only bad shifting that is the root. No, my 83T pinion bearing went at 185K and both my wife and I have had manuals all our lives. This is the ONLY tranny that has failed. Even my P/U that I have abused terribly has yet to fail at 260K. So, I don't think you can say it is ONLY X shifters.
Also agree that assembly has a lot to do with it. My Ex brother in law worked at a GM plant in New Jersey? and used to laugh when he told stories of being drunk and high before his shift and purposefully leaving things in engines and dorking other thngs up. The other guy he used to do this with was his shop steward. So much for quality. Yeah, assembly has a lot to do with it. But again, no large statistical pool to pull numbers/trends/data from so it is all opinion.
