My father had a 1986 900 SPG with the original tranny that had 325,000. My father was an H shifter. When he decided to retire the car (Rust issues), we switched the tranny to my girlfriends car because hers was blown. My girlfriend is an X shifter, tranny lasted 2 days. So in conclusion, I agree that proper shifting is essential to longer tranny life, but that manufacturing defects are common (I used to work at a dealership). Read my other post to see what happened to me.
