The C900 5-speed is weak, especially if you consider that it was originally designed for something around 100 Hp and the applications I had are 125 to 165 Hp.
But, that's what we-all have to deal with. If we want to drive C900s, we have to live with the transmissions. Couple the design with not changing lubricant regularly and you have a fine business for rebuilders.
Several months ago, Anders wrote about his observation that changing the transmission lube on a regular basis removes the chips from bad reverse changes. His observation is that, if allowed to remain in suspended the transmission, the chips tend to chew up bearings, synchros, etc. and cause the failures that so many of us are familiar with. Anders has been in the business for a long time and has seen a lot of SAABs, so I can't find any reason to not trust his observations.
The larger pinion bearing started in '89.
