Will a hydraulic pump work with engine oil?

We have a place in Canada that sells job lotted items for pennies on the dollar. It is called Princess Auto. They have all kinds of items there. I will go tomorrow and see if they have high flow pumps. The question is will a hydraulic pump suffice, or do I need something else? What flow do we desire?
Also, if we change our manual rads to automatic, can we use the water cooled area meant for auto tranny cooling for the manual setup. That way we 1) don't need to cram yet another item under the hood and locate it in good airflow, and 2) guarantee that the tranny will stay at about 180 degrees F (82 degrees C).
How will you be mating the hoses to the tranny, and where? Are there advantages to one area over another to prevent oil eddying and other oil not feeding into the cooler?
Finally, 2 suggestions. 1) in case there is a failure of the system, you need an oil flow meter to tell you if you have run dry do to a leak. Hoses tear, and adding hoses to a non hosed system can be catastrophic. 2) we all might want to place a section of heat resistant rubber hosing between your tranny and your radiator on both intake and return lines, as metal will not give as well and the engine's motions of up and down and side to side will shear or fatigue the metal hosing unless you use flex tubing to relieve the stress.
