High temperature viscosity breakdown. I think that is the key here. If oil is OK at 225, cool. If it is not as viscous then we have a problem, but I agree that most good oils should be just fine there.
My desire though is to keep tranny cool by running hot oil lines through the cooler of an automatic tranny radiator. That will avoid clutter, and keep oil at about 180 degrees (82C). It will also help tranny warm up quicker in the cold Canadian winters, which will probably do more good than cooling in the summer.
In the end it is hard to argue with your assessment Jeff as you do have a great deal of experience.
