I'm on my second 900, this one's a 92' 900T. I've been in grad. school for the last five years and living on very little. Conventional wisdom says I should be riding my bike, or a moped/Honda everywhere. I just had a clutch slave done at an indy at home because the seal failed while I was visiting for Thanksgiving. Cost me more than a week's stipend and my mechanic's real fair.
The car was facing the wrong way in the mud in my dad's pasture and it was a PITA to have it towed out. I had to be back to school and the repair was beyond my ability. Dry garage in the Spring and II think I could have pulled it off, but it was bad timing.
HOWEVER, I replaced my exhaust with downpipe, changed fuel filter and the O2 sensor, tune up, coolant flush, antenna, fixed alternator mount bolt and changed the oil in the last year.
Not all repairs are complicated and shop time is shop time. Fix what you can fix and then let a good mechanic do the rest of the stuff that's mission critical. It's not an either/or situation. And don't sweat the cosmetic stuff.
On a side note, by mom was just visiting from Florida. She's got a new Jetta 1.8T. Nice car, but I was glad to get back in my Saab.
