Years ago I lived in Tucson, AZ, and the totally groovy hippie chick I was shacking up with had a thriving pottery business. It was her father's business actually, and she did sales by loading up her van and a pull-along trailor and hit all the big southwest swap meets and rodeo events for months at a time. I visited the manufacture site a few times - a large plot of dessert land in the middle of nowhere just off an exit north of Tucson. Several large "rough hewn" buildings housed the kilns and molding tables where "transient" help made the southwest themed bowls, dishes and pitchers, with the finished product layed out on palettes outside in the sun amidst cactus and scrub oak trees. The packing process was a matter of washing all the dust and sand from them and layering them between sheets of newspaper. Because she was so charmingly groovy, she did really well both attracting customers and selling to them. It's been awhile since we spoke, so I don't know if she drives a Saab. I drive one, so there is a pottery connection, even if through two degrees of seperation.
