Say you'd like to make one kilogram of hydrogen. Not too much (I think you'll make less then 20 miles on such quantity, btw) but it's a good point to start. So you're to spend (apply) not less then W/Q amount of energy, where
W - is the amount of energy released when one kg of hydrogen was burned (oxidized) into water
and Q - is the efficiency factor of your converter.

FYI we're talking about 142900 kilojoules. That's amount of energy that releases when one kilogram of hydrogen is oxidized with oxygen (in other words when we burn out 1kg of H). To turn it to the power we need to know how much time do we have. Say if you'd like to spend/apply all this amount of energy in a single second then it'd be 142900 kW = 142.9 MW. Nice nuclear bomb :) Ok, let's spend one hour (3600 seconds) - it'll be about 142900/3600=40 kW. Once again - we will need to have been applying 40 kW of power (at it's best assuming efficiency factor is ideally 100%!) for the whole hour to produce one kilogram of hydrogen. B202L (16v turbo with stock intercooler) is capable of 130 kW - it's just FYI to imagine what power we're talking about. Stock alternator is 1.2 kW. So if you 100% load your alt with this mega-gizmo you'll have your one kilogram of hydrogen produced in 40/1.2=33 hours. And there'll be no current free to run your electric fuel pump, electric brake pump, electric ignition system, lights and even power windows.

Should I go on?

Zig

P.S.
I'm assuming that mega-turbo-suppa-gizmo that we're talking about has 100% efficiency. In fact it's less 'cause some energy will be lost in wires and other stuff (heat and so on).
