Pretty high temperatures followed a slush storm here, so I got everything buttoned back up and gave the Loctite 48 hours to cure in temps ranging from 50 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. I put it on a similar piece of kit (manifold bushing) and it never cured, though, so it makes me a bit worried.
But I went and drove it just now, that we're back into the teens fahrenheit. It looks as though it works. I popped off the cover and put some nail polish on the top bearing's inner race, and from this indicator (which may soon chip or get dissolved off) it looks as though the race is not turning.
Interestingly, I've still got some of the same whine noise, but not as bad and within a narrower band of rpm. The whole car feels different. Drivetrain has tightened up considerably, backlash-wise. The whole spectrum of sounds is different too. God, I'm going to be driving this and wondering until the day I die whether that bearing race will hold, whether I staked the lower nut enough, whether I have enough gearbox oil, etc.
But, fixed for now
I also put on one new front rotor (car parts store got the order wrong and got one instead of two) and one new rear caliper (old one was sticking). Those certainly feel good! Old caliper was full of jell-o!
