As the others have said, other than the V6, there is minimal to no GM influence in the 9000. The car was designed in '85, minor redesign in '93, and that was pretty much it.
This may be heresy, but I'm not convinced a '94 Aero is the most bang for your buck. Yes, the Aero is a nice car, but it's not head and shoulders above the rest. A '91-92 9000T - the first years with the 2.3 turbo - are pretty damn fast. Yes, they don't have the suspension differences (minor) and the Aero seats - but they are a little more useful. The Aero rear seats may look cool, but they don't fold down the same way as non-Aeros. That severely limits the usefulness of the car, in my book.
A '91-92 9000T will be less $$, and considering that there were a limited number of Aeros, more available. And the chances of finding a non-Aero that hasn't been beat within an inch of its life is somewhat better than an Aero.
Don't ignore newer cars. They won't be cheap, but a '97 or '98 non-Aero CSE is just as fast, and possibly faster, than a mid-90's Aero. Again, you don't get the fancy seats and body add-ons. And if you can get a newer car with substantially fewer miles, it can be worth the extra $$.
My complaint with the Aero is that you will be paying money for the name. Heck, I'm always impressed when I see those words on the back deck lip. But if I can get the same or near-same performance for substantially fewer $$, and get the extra storage space, I'm hard pressed.
Spend a little more time looking around and comparing the various Saab models.
