Stumbling and hesitation at low rpm can caused by a vaccum leak (lean), or a bad Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR). And yes, a bad O2 sensor. Life just isn't that simple. Or at least cars aren't.
I would pull the spark plugs. That's a simple DIY task. Go to:
http://www.boschusa.com/images/Sparkplugfaces.pdf
for examples of what good and bad plugs look like. Picture 2 is a rich mixture. I happen to think Picture 1 looks lean, because it's pretty white. Good would be a light grey, like the background of this BB.
You're pretty much at the limit of diagnosis without more tools. If you can get your hands on a digital voltmeter, more can be done. But given the available info, it's still up in the air.
Frankly, replacing the only downside of replacing the O2 sensor is that it costs money, and is more work than not replacing it. As to how much strength it takes, all the strength you need is in your brain. It ain't strength - it's leverage. No tool kit is complete without a longer ratchet or breaker bar. I have various lengths of metal pipe that can slip over my ratchet handles to give me more leverage. With the right leverage, the smallest person car rip the engine out of a car.
The big issue with the O2 sensor is access. The trick there is not to be afraid to move things out of your way. Sometimes that requires disconnecting things. Yes, that may take a little time, but you usually end up saving time by doing it, AND saving scraped skin and busted knuckles. I always like to see where my hand would go if the socket slips off the bolt. And if you have a digital camera, I strongly suggest that unless you can draw a picture of where everything goes with your eyes closed, you take pictures. It's amazing how quickly we forget where things went. Or at least draw pictures and take notes. I do, even for the simplest of stuff. Please, don't ask me how I learned that.
