At the tip of the plug there's a gap that is adjustable in very small increments. A gap tool helps you do that, basically you're just bending metal a small bit to create a larger area for the spark to travel. You should be able to get them gapped at the store (if you can find them).
Otherwise, buy a gap tool, they're very cheap.
I actually don't know much real technical stuff on these cars, ie. o2 sensor diagnosis, I'm just aggregating and parroting things I've read here.
Why the CEL went away? That may be a good sign. They do go away after a certain number of engine restarts if the condition that triggered them isn't occurring. (as far as I know)
It's my understanding that there's a way to test the o2 sensor itself using a multimeter, you might search the BB for info on that.
