Hi Bill, let me first just say thank you and everyone else for their counsel on this issue.

One question I'd just like to get out of the way first: if I disconnect the cruise module, does that take cruise out of the picture? I have no problem forgetting about cruise control for the rest of my car's natural life - I don't need it. If this is the case, I will keep it disconnected and order another Trionic ECU this evening.

If it doesn't take it out of the picture, perhaps you could comment on this format of electrical diagnosis, found on a site that I can't mention. They claim that 92 and up are slightly more complicated, but ultimately similar. Also, this allows a safer diagnosis than driving around with my brake lights disconnected.
From cruise ECU connector:
Pin 1 - power - 12V with key "ON"
Pin 2 - cruise "SET" - 12V with cruise SET button depressed
Pin 3 - pedal switches/brake lights - 12V with brake pedal or switch depressed
Pin 4 - vacuum pump - 12V while driving
Pin 5 - speed sensor - variable voltage proportional to speed
Pin 6 - cruise "RESUME" - 12V when cruise RESUME button depressed
Pin 7 - vacuum pump control - continuity with pin 1
Pin 8 - ground (at driver's side speaker cover on a 9000)
Pin 9 - cruise ON - 12V with cruise control on

If all of these check out, the ECU is the probable cause, or so I presume. How often do the vacuum components fail? From what I've gathered, a bad hose would produce intermittent failure, is that true? My cruise has never worked.

For the record, I used a small 15W soldering iron to do the work, per this board's recommendation. I know I may have made a mistake or two, but I was careful not to interrupt any traces. Regardless, if this cruise control problem can just be postponed, I'll bite the bullet and order another ECU.

Lastly, I will check this hose just in case, but the car idles just fine.
