the sensor at the thermostat and the block coolant sensor both of these affect the mixture and injection timing. On 97 cars there are actually three sensors involved but the air temp sensor (one of the three) although important, isn't in the equasion here. This sensor only comes into the act as a safe guard to prevent detonation in the event the charge air is too hot but it doesn't affect mixture - just boost. If you need the test values to check out the resistance, the values are the same as those in the air temp sensor. What I do is to measure all three at the same time and compare. This way if I find one out of tolerance, a hundred or more ohms, then I change that one. Chances that two of three being bad are remote.
FWIW - it sure sounds like you are running lean to me.
