I don't know why the handling would go down hill. You should elaborate on this and we could probably figure something out. Many, many European cars creak in the cold, apparently its a price to pay for a premium suspension. IMHO that car is a long way from being dead and I honestly can't figure how those repairs cost that much. Aisde from oil changes did your boss maintain it mechanically like he did cosmetically? This is very important! You said that he has a long history with SAABs so it is entirely possible that he was being taken by the dealer. Its a great project car that is apparently at a cross roads where you can upgrade to higher performance parts for little more than the exact part replacement cost. These are cars are a bit more expensive to maintain, but if maintained they are among the longest lasting cars in the world not to mention the most versitile, fun to drive, unique, DIY friendly and safest.
BTW you never mentioned if it is an auto or manual transmission?
