That water pumps, catalytic converters, starters, and fuel pumps shouldn't fail based upon age alone.

I just cannot see how a water pump fails before 60k miles, a cat needs to be replaced before 65k miles, a starter at 68k miles, and now a fuel pump, clutch?, engine mounts?, ???.

The truth is the car didn't do a lot of sitting, it was driven a couple of times a week and most of the miles were racked up on highway trips.

I planned on about $1200 a year in maintenance but will probably be double that by the end of December. Do the math, $800 already spent, $800 for a new fuel pump, ~$800 for new shocks and struts, and add another $1,500 if the turbo fails, not to mention the 75k mile oil change and the likely 80k mile service in there too – all totals out to about $4,300 with the turbo and with no more surprises.

I understand that shocks wear out with time just holding the car up, I get that rubber bits wear out with age, but this other stuff just boggles my mind.

It’s also not like I bought a car with a bunch of deferred maintenance. I have complete records from the previous owner and he took this car in for everything; the book is stamped every 5k miles.

I am really questioning my future ownership of this car. I may just be frustrated, as I still love to drive it, but come on.
