Maybe the cat was replaced since s coil went out in the DIC and they continued to drive it ruining the cat? Depending on the person, the shop may (sadly) take advantage of them and tell them things which are not related may need to be replaced.
Ive heard many times from new clients that they have dumped X amount of money into their car to fix something which still has not been correctly fixed. One vehicle here now she has spent over $4k to fix the "loose belt sound" coming from under the hood. When she got here, popped the hood and could tell instantly it was the timing chain. Pulled the tensioner out and it was 2mm from max. She had taken it to FOUR previous shops and had the lifters replaced at one, serpentine belt (but not pulleys) replaced at another, and lastly the three engine mounts to the tune of $800+!
Some ask me if Saabs are more expensive to repair than domestic vehicles. In my opinion they are about the same at the end of the day. I tend to think people get this Saabs are more expensive feeling since people do not know how to, or take the time to, properly diagnose the REAL problem and replace the correct part. What use is replacing the DIC when it was the CPS?
In the end, if you have a good tech who spend the time to properly figure out if its a throttlebody, a CPS, or maybe a Fuel Pressure Regulator its worth it rather than throwing parts at it endlessly without cause.
