Why are 9-3s such a P.O.S.

Looks like a new fuel pump is due pretty soon. My '01 9-3 has barely 72k miles and the pump is buzzing pretty loud, well loud enough for me to notice it. My assumption is that this is a sign of impending failure. Am I wrong?
Also, the transmission is grinding every 9th time I put it into reverse (5sp BTW); what the hell could this be?
Couple this with a failing turbo (occasional puff of smoke on cold starts), worn out shocks and struts, the $500 starter I just had to replace, and the $300 on tracking down a in the front end right dead smack at 65mph that has yet to be resolved.
I just bought the car in June from the original owner who had recently replaced the water pump and catalytic converter in the past few thousand miles.
All of these failures are premature. Why?
Okay, I can understand how struts would wear out just by sitting, but electric motors? Water pumps? Cat converters? What the heck gives?
The car has been babied its whole life; dealer serviced for EVERYTHING, oil changes <5k every time, always parked in a garage, etc.
Next thing you know I'll have sludge or a heater box failure. Why did I ever run from car payments? It sure seems like I'm not coming out ahead.
Why is this happening, and when is it going to end? Should I cut my losses and go get that TT I've been lusting after?
3rd Saab BTW
