I have always had an AWD Subaru in parallel with a FWD SAAB. I am 100% certain that a FWD car is way better in snow than a AWD car. I feel way more confident driving my SAABs than my AWD Subaru. So does my wife.
My sister-in-law just switched to a FWD Volvo after driving AWD Subarus for many years. She is absolutely amazed at how much better the Volvo is in the snow.
I attended a SAE meeting on AWD systems several years ago. One of the topics discussed was the behavior on low friction surfaces. The head Subaru engineer resposible for AWD system development told me that he feels that AWD systems are inherently more unpredictable on low friction surfaces and that a 2WD car driven competently will always be safer than an AWD car in the snow. He also said that it is infinitely more difficult to regain control of an AWD vehicle once a certain threashold has been reached.
