I clearly remember a friend's '94 100CS having a botton by the e-brake that engaged the rear differential (or something like that) It was very clearly an on/off switch.
That car (w/ 2.8 v6 and auto) was surprisingly slow - maybe just poorly selected gear ratios but boy did it take a while to get up to 50 mph - perhaps it should have been shifted 1-2-3-D instead of just "D"?
