AWD system has a front drive bias, i.e. it acts more like a FWD vehicle so as to minimize the problem you are talking about when you start losing traction. A FWD vehicle tend to understeer and this is easier to recover than oversteer (most commonly found in a RWD/AWD vehicle when the tail starts to come out).
This is exactly why you need winter tires even on AWD vehicles.
