there are certain times when 4WD or AWD is more effective. But not often.
Was stopped in my wife's Exploder on a narrow 2-lane ski area access road--short steep pitch that was mostly ice. An FWD Volvo and a Golf slid downhill past me, all four locked up. I waited until I could go, had it in low-range, eased on the gas and up we went. In that kind of condition, AWD or 4WD has an advantage, but NOT for most driving. I have had 2 FWD VWs and 2 Saabs, all usually with 4 snow tires in the winter and never a problem.
My Saab would have spun and I would have had to back down to make a run, but still could have gotten up the hill. OTOH, my wife led a snow plow up our unplowed steep hill in 6" of fresh snow in our C900 without snow tires one winter.
All AWD/4Wd does is make people FEEL safer. A nice illusion.
Drive smart, have good tires and you'll get there.
