I feel that I am a pretty good driver in the snow and can say that my Saab and I have passed many 4WD trucks on a steep pass in VT. I think that if you know how to drive an AWD, 4WD, or anything for that matter you will be better than anyone who does not drive well in the snow.
One of the problems I see with AWD (every winter here in CT especially) is the false sense of security. Just look at all the jeeps in the ditches after the snow. People think they can drive on snow just as they do on dry so long as they have 4WD. That is not the case. I do believe that you can pull out of far more problems in an AWD than a 2WD since you will have more on demand power, that is usable in the slick. 2WD is great in the snow but once your front end starts to slip it is far harder to get it back than in a AWD car.
I have a buddy that lives in VT and drives a old Pontiac Ferro (sp) all winter long and does fine. He just knows how to drive.
The moral of my story, it is the driver not the car in most cases.
