Now people who say that any 2WD system is supperior to AWD under any road conditions are mistaken.
The problem with AWD systems on the market is that only a small fraction out there is good, and most are setup for dry/rain conditions. Not for snow.
Sure enough an AWD car with a wrong power bias setup can be very hard to drive on icy roads, this is common as most AWD cars have a 50/50 or rear power bias setup. However on snow, you want a front bias, with more torque going to the front wheel, or you want to lockup the center differential.
Very few cars can set the power bias via an electronic or mechanical bias selection, the only ones that come to my mind are the Porsche 959 and the the Mitsu. EVO VII
Sure enough if you have an AWD car with too much torque going to the rear wheels it will become hard to predict when you drive it.
A nice case in point are my two Lancia's the one I had, the one I have now. My old one had a front bias which made it faster on dry roads and easier to drive on snow, but not as good on wet roads. My current one has a rear bias which makes it quicker in hairpins and wet roads, but which makes it hard to drive on dry roads and which is not good at all on snow.
Regards,
Coolknight
