I've also rented a Sonata. I thought it was fine for what it is, and it's not meant to compete with a 9-5. Just a decent transportation appliance. I hear the V6 version is pretty nice, but I think the chassis need help.
Haven't rented a Mazda 6, although I keep trying to find one. Maybe next week in FL. I figured the 4 cyl would be a yawn.
I agree on the HHR. I <almost> rented one a while back. But I got in, adjusted the seat, looked around, and thought, "I'm not spending 3 days in this POS." Like you note, cheap-cheap-cheap and the blind spots are terrible. Wound up in a Malibu or something equally forgettable.
As for the E350 AIS writes about, I haven't driven one but have been chauffeured around in them numerous times when in Europe. Noise level is less than our Saabs, but ride and seating is not really any better--just a bit different. Dash layout is no more than fair. Mercedes are nice cars but over-rated and over-priced, IMHO.
My comparisons is not to my wife's 9-5 wagon but to my '96 9000 CSE.
I know us Saab-guys are biased (or just quirky), but most other cars just don't do much for me.
